Next 10 years to expand its total power production by 25 terrawatt hours from alternative energy sources.STOCKHOLM - Sweden is planning to build 2,000 new wind turbines in the next 10 years to expand its total power production by 25 terrawatt hours from alternative energy sources. The increase is equivalent to about half of the power generated by the country's nuclear reactors in 2009. Nuclear power currently accounts for about 50% of Sweden's electricity production.
The government said Tuesday it would present parliament on Thursday with its proposal for increasing wind power by 10 terrawatt hours. Sweden last year announced plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% from 1990 levels by making renewable energy account for about half of the nation's energy by 2020.
