SOUTHERN Gold hopes to release a geothermal energy resource at its Torrens project in South Australia by next month. The company said it had contracted consultants Hot Dry Rocks to calculate a resource at the project, where high heat flows had been detected. Southern Gold's Torrens project covers 10,000sq km just north of Port Augusta.

"The potential economics of the Torrens geothermal project are built around the proximity of commercially viable insulated hot rocks to high-voltage power distribution infrastructure and nearby market demand," a company spokesman said. "The project contains more than 30 historic drill holes with depths greater than 500m. "Temperature probe and drill core conductivity measurements from these deep holes would be highly valuable in providing a rapid assessment of the surrounding heat flow regime" Southern Gold shares closed up lc at 13c yesterday.
