Bid for a no-carbon Brisbane

Brisbane should set itself a target to radically reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and become Australia's first carbon-free city, according to QUT renewable energy expert Professor John Bell. He said Queensland was putting too much faith in so-called "clean coal" technology to capture carbon emissions from coal-fired power stations.

Professor Belt, who is speaking at River festival's Subtropical Cities Conference tomorrow, said: "If you could target getting a zero-carbon city this would create huge opportunities for other industries and provide a different set of jobs and style of employment. "We should be starting to think about ways we can achieve that." Professor Bell said Queensland policy makers were "dreaming" if they thought carbon capture and storage to reduce the impact of coal-fired power stations was the answer.

Queensland Minister for Sustainability and Climate Change Andrew McNamara said that, in principle, he would support setting a target to achieve a carbon-free Brisbane. "Ambitious targets should be things we are looking at. We want to reduce our carbon footprint everywhere we can," he said.
